Diana Krall? | ||
|
Regardless of Diana's "net soul worth," I'm frankly surprised that anyone would even think of comparing Pamela MacCarthy to Diana Krall. Their voices and styles are like night and day. Diana: low, husky, understated. Pamela: low, high, in between, soulful, bluesy, brash but smooth at the same time. The only similarity seems to be the blonde hair.

The young women that Pamela thinks are not paying dues, are on airplanes several times a week, living in hotel rooms, eating meals catch as catch can. Believe me, Pamela, dues are being paid in full. How much in dues paid will you lay onto the young men being contracted for millions of dollars a year, right out of high school and or college? Come on. get with it. Get your demos out there. Hit the street looking for management. By all means, get into the audition rooms. Don't sit at the piano in some chintzy lounge and feel that you are being the subject of discrimination.

Agreeing with Business Mgr. In this day and age, the old dodge of "I paid my dues" is a crutch that lazy, or half talent people rely upon.

Re: Racism in Jazz | ||

The problem is that we even compare one jazz singer to another. Ella is Ella, Sarah is Sarah, Nancy is Nancy, Frank is Frank, Jane is Jane, you know. And, Diana is Diana, Tony is Tony, Peter is Peter, Harry is Harry, etc. I do not look for the reincarnation of one jazz singer in another. That is not fair, and takes away from the uniqueness of each and every one of them. Each one is unique in his/her own way, and, for the record, I love each and every one of them, in many different ways, for many different reasons. I remember trying to find the words to tell someone that I loved them, and could not find the words. I invited her over, put on Diana Krall's "When I Look Into Your Eyes" cd, turned the lights down low and the object of my desire understood, immediately. Thanks Diana!

It has been awhile since I have connected with this site, so forgive me if I have been a little late in responding with your very kind words and comments. Thank you, daddy, thank you, indeed, for them. Hey, enough already! Good music is good music, and good jazz is good jazz! That is what my parents taught me, and believe me, that sentiment has taught me a whole hell of a lot, not only about music and jazz, in particular, but about life in general. I challenge anyone who can find a better jazz cd out there today Lady Di's "Live In Paris' cd. Girlfriend got it going on! It is totally awesome, and other than the "Rumors" cd of a long time ago by Fleetwood Mac, that is the only cd I actually confess to listening to each and every day. Diana Krall deserves all of the success she is enjoying these days! God bless her! My jazz musician parents are in heaven now, but each time I put on a Diana Krall cd, I know they are up there, smiling and congratulating me on my good taste. Indeed, they taught me well!

I became a Krall fan when "The Look of Love" came out.I was curious to hear what she sounded like when she first came on the scene 10 years ago.So I ordered her first album Stepping Out!WOOOOO!!!I didn't know she could swing like that!This is before the glitz and glamour!She definitly worshipped the ground Nat King Cole played on!!You can hear him in her playing!
Again thanks for sharing some of the lessons your parents taught you.I know they live in your heart . |

Re: Racism in todays Jazz Vocal music/music in general | ||

At some point 'time' becomes the great equalizer. Although I do listen to some of the more modern singers, I just recently bought some wonderful CD's by Eartha Kitt, Nancy Wilson, and Joe Morello. (Brubecks drummer) Will all the singers they are showcasing today withstand the test of time? It doesn't really matter in a decade or two what the color is. I have always felt a deep admiration for the early singers of ALL styles because of what they had to put up with to go on the road and spread their music. How about the early blues musicians that slept in their cars because no hotel would let them in? The same held true for all the Apollo jazz musicians. Even country singers like Kitty Wells and Patsy Kline were trailblazers for being women on the road. Can you imagine the male harassment they endured? I fully support equal billing, but also believe that good talent is like a basketball floating in a pool. You can try to suppress it and push it under, but the harder you push down the easier it becomes for your hand to slip off and "WHOOOSH" all the talent rockets to the top!!!
